Sumner James and Z Pocket are Sumner James Phillips and Daniel Peter Michalak Jr., respectively. We specialize in long-distance collaboration using analogue instruments captured and corrupted by digital manipulation. Our general aim is to explore creativity in the mundane.

Sometimes we write songs for singing and use a different band name (Bombadil). This time we didn't.

Piano + Clarinet is a blend of Daniel's French countryside piano layered with James' downtown Durham clarinet. These were our first instruments, respectively. James hadn't played the clarinet since 1997 and was surprised to find out he still could. Daniel has played piano most days since 1990 but it is still exciting to him.

We attempted to build a universe that straddles the line between classical and very unconventional. Our hope is that the listener will find a pleasant background to augment their foreground.
